What Is the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)?

  • The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), also referred to as the Indian Justice Code, is India’s new criminal code. It officially replaced the Indian Penal Code effective 1 July 2024

  • It was passed by Parliament in December 2023 and received the President’s assent on 25 December 2023

Key Features of BNS

1. Structural & Legal Updates

  • The number of sections has been reduced from the IPC’s 511 to 358 sections, with 21 new offenses introduced, including hate crimes and mob lynching. The Economic Times

  • More severe punishments have been introduced: greater imprisonment terms for 33 offenses, higher fines for 83 offenses, and mandatory minimum sentences for 23. Community service has also been introduced as a sentencing option for six offenses. Wikipedia
